Regions

Lakes to Locks Passage consists of four sub-regions -- Lake Champlain, Champlain Canal/Upper Hudson River, Lake George and the Richelieu Valley in Quebec. The bi-national quality of the region is captured in the interpretive theme "The Four Lives of Lakes to Locks Passage." Each region has a unique sense of place which reflects the inter-relationship between natural resources and historic human activities that shaped our nation's history.

When European superpowers came to North America in the 1600's, they sent explorers to stake their claims along this waterway. The French came from the north, the English and Dutch from the south, and they clashed along the regions we now know as Lake Champlain and Lake George. Delightful French heritage is found in the Richelieu Valley, and many Franco-American descendents, and their cultural expressions, can be seen throughout the Lake Champlain and Lake George regions.

The Dutch and English influence is seen along the upper Hudson River/Champlain Canal region, the community names often confound those who are visitors to the region. Start your travel along Lakes to Locks Passage by exploring the stories that are told on this website, and be sure to visit the communities that bring this rich heritage to life.
